Self-ruqyah is a Sunnah-based form of spiritual healing using the exact words of the Qur’an and authentic supplications taught by the Prophet ﷺ. It is an act of worship, reliance upon Allah, and a means of protection from evil eye, envy, siḥr, whispers, and spiritual harm. When performed correctly, self-ruqyah strengthens īmān, brings calm to the heart, and restores spiritual balance. It is not superstition, ritual, or emotion-based practice. It is ʿibādah grounded in revelation.
How to Perform Self-Ruqyah Correctly?
1. Begin With Correct Belief and Intention
Ruqyah only benefits by Allah’s permission.
Allah says:
“They do not harm anyone except by Allah’s permission.”
[Qur’an 2:102]
Your intention must be reliance upon Allah alone, not on the words themselves or on your voice.
2. Ensure You Are Using Only Qur’an and Authentic Duʿā
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Present your ruqyah to me. There is no harm in ruqyah so long as it contains no shirk.”
[Sahih Muslim 2200]
Self-ruqyah must contain only Qur’an and authentic supplications from the Sunnah.
3. Be in a State of Wuḍū’ if Possible
While wuḍū’ is not a condition, it increases khushūʿ, purity, and presence of heart.
4. Begin With Seeking Refuge
Say clearly and attentively:
“I seek refuge in Allah from Shayṭān, the accursed.”
5. Recite Sūrat al-Fātiḥah
The Prophet ﷺ approved its use in ruqyah.
[Sahih al-Bukhari 5736]
Recite Sūrat al-Fātiḥah slowly, once or multiple times.
6. Recite Āyat al-Kursī
Allah says:
[Qur’an 2:255]
7. Recite the Three Quls
Recite:
The Prophet ﷺ used to recite these whenever he went to bed.
[Sahih al-Bukhari 5017]
8. Place Your Hand on Yourself if You Wish
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Place your hand at the place where you feel pain in your body and say Bismillah (in the name of Allah) three times and seven times A'udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhiru (I seek refuge with Allah and with His Power from the evil that I find and that I fear)."
[Sahih Muslim 2202]
This is Sunnah and permissible for self-ruqyah.
9. Recite the Prophetic Duʿā for Healing
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and cure. You are the Healer. There is no cure but Your cure, a cure that leaves no illness.”
[Sahih al-Bukhari 5675 | Sahih Muslim 2191]
10. Perform Ruqyah Daily if Needed
Morning and evening are especially effective. The Prophet ﷺ regularly recited ruqyah as protection.
11. Avoid Innovated Practices
Do not:
• Use unknown words
• Use numbers, symbols, or talismans
• Believe objects have power
• Use music or altered Qur’an
• Pay for secret formulas
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever introduces into this matter of ours what is not from it, it is rejected.”
[Sahih al-Bukhari 2697 | Sahih Muslim 1718]
12. Combine Ruqyah With Obedience
Ruqyah is strengthened by:
• Ṣalāh
• Leaving sin
• Dhikr
• Tawbah
• Trust in Allah
A heart connected to Allah is harder to harm.
13. Be Patient and Trust Allah’s Timing
Healing may be immediate or gradual. Allah says:
“And We send down of the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy.”
[Qur’an 17:82]
The Qur’an always heals — but Allah chooses how and when.
14. Do Not Replace Medical Treatment With Ruqyah
Islam encourages treatment. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Seek treatment, O servants of Allah.”
[Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2038 | Hasan]
Ruqyah complements treatment, it does not negate it.
Self-ruqyah is submission, trust, and remembrance. When performed with correct belief, authentic words, and sincerity, it becomes a shield, a healing, and a means of drawing closer to Allah. The cure is not in your voice — it is in the One you are calling upon.
