This question often causes deep confusion and emotional discomfort, especially when verses are read without context. From an Islamic perspective, Allah’s guidance and misguidance are never arbitrary, cruel, or unjust. The Qur’an is clear that Allah is perfectly just, perfectly wise, and never wrongs anyone. Understanding this issue requires looking at how the Qur’an itself explains misguidance, not isolating a single phrase.

The Qur’an affirms two truths at the same time:
• Allah is the One who guides and misguides.
• Human beings are morally responsible for their choices.

These are not contradictions. They are two sides of the same reality: Allah’s absolute knowledge and power, and human accountability within that system.

Why Does Allah “Send Astray” Whom He Wills?

1. Allah Does Not Misguide Without Cause

Allah says:
“And He leaves none to stray except the rebellious.”
[Qur’an 2:26]

Misguidance is not random. It comes after persistent rebellion, arrogance, or rejection of truth. Allah does not lead sincere seekers astray.

2. Misguidance Is a Consequence of Human Choice

Allah says:
“So when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate.”
[Qur’an 61:5]

This verse establishes a clear sequence.
First: they chose deviation.
Then: Allah allowed their hearts to turn further away.

Allah’s “sending astray” is a response, not an initiation.

3. Guidance Is Offered Before Misguidance

Allah says:
“And We showed him the two paths ˹of right and wrong˺
.”

[Qur’an 90:10]

Every human being is given access to guidance through:
• Fiṭrah
• Reason
• Revelation
• Conscience

No one is punished or misled without first being shown the truth.

4. Allah Never Wrongfully Misguides Anyone

Allah says:
“Allah does not intend injustice for the servants.”
[Qur’an 40:31]

And:
“And your Lord is not unjust to His servants.”
[Qur’an 41:46]

Any interpretation that portrays Allah as arbitrarily misleading sincere people contradicts explicit Qur’anic statements.

5. Misguidance Often Means Withdrawal of Divine Help

When Allah “leaves” someone astray, it does not mean He forces disbelief into their heart. It means He withdraws special assistance after persistent rejection.

Allah says:
“We turn their hearts and their eyes because they refused to believe in it the first time.”
[Qur’an 6:110]

This is spiritual consequence, not oppression.

6. Allah Guides Those Who Seek Guidance

Allah says:
“Those who seek guidance, He increases them in guidance.”
[Qur’an 47:17]

And:
“Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.”
[Qur’an 5:51]

Guidance grows with sincerity. Misguidance grows with arrogance.

7. Arrogance Is a Primary Cause of Misguidance

Allah says:
“I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant upon the earth without right.”
[Qur’an 7:146]

Misguidance is often the sealing of a heart that refused humility, not a denial of opportunity.

8. Allah’s Knowledge Does Not Remove Human Responsibility

Allah’s foreknowledge of who will be guided does not force their choice. Knowledge is not coercion.
Allah knows who will turn away, but they turn away by their own will.

Allah says:
“Whoever wills — let him believe; and whoever wills — let him disbelieve.”
[Qur’an 18:29]

Choice exists. Accountability exists.

9. Misguidance Is Also a Form of Justice

When truth is repeatedly mocked, rejected, or weaponized, Allah allows the heart to harden. This is not cruelty. It is justice responding to persistence in wrongdoing.

Allah says:
“Allah has sealed their hearts.”
[Qur’an 2:7]

This sealing comes after willful rejection, not before it.

10. Fear of Misguidance Is a Sign of Guidance

The very concern, “What if Allah sends me astray?” is itself a sign of sincerity. Those whom Allah abandons do not worry about guidance at all.

The believers constantly made duʿā:
رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا
“Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us.”
[Qur’an 3:8]

Allah does not misguide innocent seekers.
He does not deny truth to sincere hearts.
He does not arbitrarily send people astray.

Misguidance in the Qur’an is a consequence, not a trap.
Guidance is a response to humility, not luck.

If you seek Allah honestly, fear misguidance, and ask for truth — Allah promises guidance.
And Allah never breaks His promise.
