Being mocked by strangers hurts. Being mocked by family cuts deeper. Islam does not deny that pain. It gives you a clear response: patience, dignity, and consistency.
How to Stay Patient When Family Mocks Your Faith?
1. Expect That Faith Will Be Tested
Allah says:
“Do people think they will be left to say, ‘We believe,’ and they will not be tested?”
[Qur’an 29:2]
Mockery is a test, not proof that you chose wrong.
2. Do Not Engage in Endless Arguments
Allah says:
“And when the ignorant address them harshly, they say words of peace.”
[Qur’an 25:63]
Silence with dignity is often stronger than defensive debate.
3. Separate Disrespect From Disobedience
You do not obey family in sin, but you still treat them well.
Allah says:
“Accompany them in this world with kindness.”
[Qur’an 31:15]
Firm faith and good character can coexist.
4. Remember That the Prophets Were Mocked
Mockery does not reduce truth.
Allah says:
“Messengers before you were certainly mocked.”
[Qur’an 6:10]
You are not alone in being misunderstood.
5. Control Your Reaction Before It Controls You
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The strong one is not the one who overpowers others. The strong one is the one who controls himself when angry.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6114 | Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2609]
Patience is strength, not weakness.
6. Do Not Internalize Their Words
Their mockery reflects their confusion, not your worth.
Allah says:
“Do not be saddened by what they say.”
[Qur’an 10:65]
You are not defined by their reaction.
7. Limit Exposure When Necessary
If conversations constantly turn hostile, reduce them.
Allah says:
“Do not sit with them until they engage in another conversation.”
[Qur’an 4:140]
Distance can be wisdom, not disrespect.
8. Respond With Consistent Good Character
Over time, behavior speaks louder than words.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“I was sent to perfect good character.”
[Musnad Aḥmad 8595 | Ṣaḥīḥ]
Patience under pressure reflects real īmān.
9. Make Duʿāʾ for Firmness
Hearts fluctuate under pressure.
The Prophet ﷺ used to say:
“O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion.”
[Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2140 | Ṣaḥīḥ]
Firmness is sustained through duʿāʾ.
10. Remember That Allah Sees Your Patience
Allah says:
“Indeed, Allah is with the patient.”
[Qur’an 2:153]
Mockery is temporary. Reward is lasting.
Patience does not mean you enjoy the pain.
It means you refuse to let it change your faith.
Stay steady. Stay dignified. Stay connected to Allah.
