Sleep in Islam is not just rest. It is an act you prepare for with intention and remembrance.
How to Prepare for Sleep the Sunnah Way?
1. Sleep Early and Avoid Late Night Talking
The Prophet ﷺ disliked sleeping before ʿIshāʾ and talking after it.
“He used to dislike sleeping before ʿIshāʾ and talking after it.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 568 | Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 647]
This protects your sleep and helps you wake for Fajr.
2. Make Wuḍūʾ Before Sleeping
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When you go to your bed, perform wuḍūʾ like for prayer.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 247 | Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2710]
Sleep in a state of purity.
3. Dust Your Bed
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When anyone of you go to bed, he should shake out his bed with the inside of his waist sheet, for he does not know what has come on to it after him.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6320 | Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2714]
A simple Sunnah many forget.
4. Sleep on Your Right Side
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Lie on your right side.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 247 | Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2710]
This is the Sunnah position.
5. Recite the Three Quls
The Prophet ﷺ would recite:
Then blow into his hands and wipe his body.
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5017]
6. Recite Āyat al-Kursī
In the authentic narration, Shayṭān told Abū Hurayrah
“Whenever you go to bed, recite "Ayat-al-Kursi"-- 'Allahu la ilaha illa huwa-l-Haiy-ul Qaiyum' till you finish the whole verse. (If you do so), Allah will appoint a guard for you who will stay with you and no satan will come near you till morning.”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“He told you the truth, even though he is a liar.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2311]
7. Recite the Last Two Verses of Al-Baqarah
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever recites the last two verses of Sūrah al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5009 | Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 807]
8. Say the Sleep Duʿāʾ
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6324]
9. Say SubḥānAllah, Alḥamdulillah, Allahu Akbar
The Prophet ﷺ told Fāṭimah and 'Ali
“Say SubḥānAllah 33 times, Alḥamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 34 times.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 6318 | Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2727]
10. Make a Clear Intention
Intend:
To wake for Fajr
To use sleep as rest for worship
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever goes to his bed intending to get up and pray qiyam at night, then sleep overwhelms him until morning, will have recorded that which he intended and his sleep is a charity given to him by his Lord, the Mighty and Sublime.”
[Sunan al-Nasāʾī 1787 | Ṣaḥīḥ]
Clear Routine
Wuḍūʾ → Bed → Dhikr → Duʿāʾ → Sleep on right side
Your day does not end randomly.
It ends with dhikr, intention, and protection.
