Arrogance is not just thinking you are better. It is rejecting truth and looking down on people. It can grow quietly if you do not check it.
How to Protect Yourself From Arrogance?
1. Know What Arrogance Actually Is
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Arrogance is rejecting the truth and looking down on people.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 91]
It shows in how you respond to truth and how you treat others.
2. Remember Who You Really Are
Allah says:
“And indeed, We created humankind from an extract of clay, then placed each ˹human˺ as a sperm-drop in a secure place.”
[Qur’an 23:12-13]
Your origin and your end are not reasons for pride.
3. Accept Correction Quickly
If you resist being corrected, arrogance is already there.
A humble person adjusts. An arrogant one defends.
4. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
Arrogance grows through comparison.
Allah says:
“So do not claim yourselves to be pure.”
[Qur’an 53:32]
Focus on your own accountability.
5. Treat People With Respect, Not Superiority
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“It is enough evil for a person to look down upon his Muslim brother.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2564]
How you treat people reveals what is inside.
6. Do Good Without Wanting Recognition
If you need to be seen, arrogance can grow.
Allah says:
“Whatever good you put forward for yourselves, you will find it with Allah.”
[Qur’an 2:110]
Do it for Allah, not for attention.
7. Remember That Everything You Have Is From Allah
Allah says:
“And whatever you have of favor—it is from Allah.”
[Qur’an 16:53]
You did not create your intelligence, wealth, or ability.
8. Stay Close to Simple People and Environments
The Prophet ﷺ lived simply.
Simplicity protects you from feeling above others.
9. Watch Your Internal Talk
Arrogance starts in thoughts like:
- “I’m better than them”
- “They don’t understand like I do”
Catch it early and correct it.
10. Remember the Consequence of Arrogance
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“No one who has an atom’s weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 91]
This is serious. It is not a small trait.
Arrogance is not always loud.
It can be quiet, internal, and hidden.
Stay aware of yourself.
Accept truth quickly.
Treat people with respect.
That is how you protect your heart.
