The evil eye, known as al-‘ayn (العين) in Arabic, is something Islam teaches us to take seriously. But believing in the evil eye does not mean blaming every illness, setback, or unexpected problem on someone else's jealousy.
What Is the Evil Eye in Islam?
The evil eye is harm that can occur through someone's gaze of envy or admiration, by Allah's permission.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
الْعَيْنُ حَقٌّ
"The effect of an evil eye is a fact." Sahih al-Bukhari 5740
This confirms that the evil eye is real. However, it does not mean that every admiring look causes harm or that anyone has the power to harm others independently of Allah's will.
What Is the Difference Between the Evil Eye and Envy?
The two are closely connected, but they are not exactly the same.
Envy (hasad) is when a person resents a blessing that someone else has. They may wish that blessing would disappear.
The evil eye (‘ayn) involves harm connected to someone's gaze or admiration. It is not necessarily caused by someone deliberately wishing harm.
Can Someone Give You the Evil Eye Without Being Jealous?
Yes. A person may admire something without intending to hurt its owner.
A well-known incident involved two companions, Sahl ibn Hunayf and ‘Amir ibn Rabi‘ah.
‘Amir saw Sahl bathing and commented on the beauty of his skin. Sahl then collapsed.
When the Prophet ﷺ learned what had happened, he rebuked ‘Amir and instructed that when someone sees something they admire, they should pray for Allah to bless it.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3509 — graded Sahih.
This incident teaches us something important: you do not need to assume that someone secretly hates you just because you are concerned about the evil eye.
It also teaches us to make du‘a for others when we admire their appearance, children, possessions, or achievements, instead of simply expressing amazement.
Can the Evil Eye Cause Harm?
Yes. The Sunnah establishes that the evil eye can cause real harm, including physical effects.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The influence of an evil eye is a fact; if anything would precede the destiny it would be the influence of an evil eye..."
Sahih Muslim 2188
This does not mean that the evil eye can override Allah's decree. The wording emphasizes how serious its effects can be. Nothing happens outside Allah's knowledge and decree.
The Prophet ﷺ also saw a girl in the home of Umm Salamah who had a mark on her face and instructed that ruqyah be performed for her because she was affected by the evil eye.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5739
How Do You Know If You Have the Evil Eye?
You may come across lists claiming that the following are definite signs of the evil eye: headaches, constant tiredness, unexplained sadness, nightmares, sudden arguments, or losing interest in things you once enjoyed.
The problem is that these symptoms can have many different causes. The Prophet ﷺ did not establish this collection of symptoms as a diagnostic test for the evil eye.
What Should You Do If You Suspect the Evil Eye?
Begin with two actions: seek Allah's protection through ruqyah and investigate ordinary explanations for what is happening.
If you suddenly feel unwell, seek medical care where needed. If your business is struggling, examine your finances and business decisions. If your marriage is experiencing difficulties, address the actual problems rather than immediately assuming someone has envied your relationship.
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged seeking medical treatment.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3855 — graded Sahih.
There is no contradiction between using ruqyah and seeking practical treatment.
How to Protect Yourself From the Evil Eye in Islam
The Sunnah teaches specific actions for seeking protection. These can become part of your ordinary daily routine rather than something you only remember when you feel afraid.
1. Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas Every Morning and Evening
The Prophet ﷺ instructed Abdullah ibn Khubayb to recite these three surahs three times in the morning and evening, explaining that they would suffice him.
Sunan Abi Dawud 5082
Do not make this dependent on whether you expect to meet jealous people that day. These are regular acts of seeking protection from Allah.
2. Follow the Prophet's Bedtime Practice
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet ﷺ would bring his palms together, recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas, blow lightly into his palms, and wipe over the parts of his body he could reach.
He would repeat this three times.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5017
3. Make Du'a for Your Children's Protection
The Prophet ﷺ used to seek Allah's protection for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn using the following words:
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لاَمَّةٍ
Transliteration: A‘udhu bi-kalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammah, wa min kulli ‘aynin lammah.
Meaning: I seek refuge in Allah's perfect words from every devil, harmful creature, and harmful evil eye.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3371
This is especially useful for parents who worry about their children being admired or receiving unwanted attention.
Instead of constantly worrying about who may be looking at your child, regularly seek Allah's protection for them.
4. Ask Allah to Bless What You Admire
One of the most practical lessons from the incident involving Sahl ibn Hunayf is that we should ask Allah to place blessings in something that impresses us.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3509
For example, when you admire someone's child, home, appearance, or success, say:
اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُ
Allahumma barik lahu.
Meaning: O Allah, bless him.
These are examples of asking for barakah, not exact fixed formulas prescribed in that narration.
Make this a habit when complimenting others.
How to Treat the Evil Eye With Ruqyah
Ruqyah is the recitation of Qur'anic verses and permissible supplications to seek Allah's protection and healing.
The Prophet ﷺ permitted ruqyah that does not involve shirk.
Sahih Muslim 2200
1. Recite Surah Al-Fatihah
Surah Al-Fatihah is established as a form of ruqyah.
In an authentic hadith, a companion recited Al-Fatihah over a man who had been bitten or stung. The Prophet ﷺ approved of using it as ruqyah.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5736
You can recite Al-Fatihah when seeking healing without inventing a required number of repetitions for treating the evil eye.
2. Recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas
These three surahs are also established in prophetic ruqyah.
Aisha reported that when the Prophet ﷺ became ill, he instructed her to perform the recitation and wiping practice for him.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5748
You do not need to depend on a professional raqi for every concern. You can perform simple ruqyah yourself using the Qur'an and authentic supplications.
3. Recite the Prophetic Du'a for Healing
When the Prophet ﷺ was ill, Jibril recited ruqyah for him.
Transliteration: Bismillahi arqika, min kulli shay'in yu'dhika, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘ayni hasid, Allahu yashfika, bismillahi arqika.
Meaning: In Allah's name, I perform ruqyah for you against whatever harms you, including the evil of an envious eye. May Allah heal you.
Sahih Muslim 2186
This supplication can be recited when performing ruqyah for another person.
What If You Know Who Gave You the Evil Eye?
The Sunnah mentions a specific treatment involving washing.
In the incident of Sahl ibn Hunayf, the Prophet ﷺ instructed ‘Amir ibn Rabi‘ah to wash certain parts of his body, and the water was then poured over Sahl.
Sunan Ibn Majah 3509
The Prophet ﷺ also instructed people to cooperate when asked to wash in connection with treating the evil eye.
Sahih Muslim 2188
However, this does not mean you should start identifying potential suspects whenever something goes wrong.
There is a major difference between the specific incident described in the Sunnah and making an accusation based on a feeling.
Do not accuse someone simply because they complimented you before you became ill or because you believe they are jealous.
Is Saying MashaAllah Enough to Prevent the Evil Eye?
Saying MashaAllah is a good remembrance of Allah, but it is important to understand what the Qur'an and Sunnah actually establish.
Allah says in Surah Al-Kahf:
مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ
Ma sha Allah, la quwwata illa billah.
Meaning: What Allah has willed; there is no power except with Allah.
(Surah Al-Kahf 18:39)
The verse is part of a conversation about a man and his garden, reminding him that his blessings come from Allah.
However, the specific instruction in the hadith about admiring another person is to pray for Allah to bless them.
Therefore, do not assume that saying MashaAllah is a substitute for making du'a for barakah.
Can You Protect Yourself With an Evil Eye Bracelet?
Blue-eye bracelets, beads, and other objects are often sold as protection against the evil eye.
However, the Sunnah does not establish these objects as a means of protection.
The Prophet ﷺ warned against amulets and charms associated with shirk.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3883
If an object is being worn or displayed because someone believes it protects them from the evil eye, it falls under the concern raised by these teachings.
A decoration and an object relied upon for supernatural protection are not the same thing. What matters here is the use of the object as an amulet.
Use the protective supplications established in the Sunnah rather than depending on charms or bracelets.
Can Someone Give You the Evil Eye Through Social Media?
The general reality of the evil eye is established.
You can choose to keep certain blessings private for sensible reasons, such as protecting your children's privacy or maintaining personal boundaries.
Can You Give Yourself the Evil Eye?
Some scholars discuss the possibility of a person affecting themselves through admiration. However, the authentic narrations cited here do not provide a specific diagnostic test or separate treatment for a self-inflicted evil eye.
What is clearly established is the importance of remembering Allah, recognizing blessings as coming from Him, and asking Him for barakah.
Can Ruqyah Be Performed Without Knowing Who Caused the Evil Eye?
Yes. You do not need to identify or accuse anyone before reciting the Qur'an and seeking Allah's healing.
This is especially important when there is no clear evidence that another person caused the harm.
